Didn't we have updated versions of some of these maps on the old forums? Maybe my imagination is playing tricks on me.
I havent been updating the nomination list on the old forum. If there is an old version in the list here, please point it out specifically and I'll update it.
Sadly, we are getting back in the rut of the same 3-5 maps over and over. I wish there were a way to encourage discovering new maps.
Here's what I'd like to see: 1. Once or twice a month, have a new/relatively unplayed map event. 2. The event should be midweek, so as not to kill weekend servers. It should last no longer than an hour. It's too much to ask these things to go very long. 3. Admin/event organizer post in the forums a list of maps that will be played, and in what order. 4. During the event, no rtv/nominate/etc. Map changes are run by an admin. If it sucks, admin can always switch early. 5. People post in the forums which maps they liked. If you like a map, it's now your job to nominate that map during other playtimes to broaden exposure. 6. ??? 7. Profit. After reviewing the map list above, it's pretty clear my memory is shit or I haven't played some of the maps. I'd like to broaden my horizons, but I'd also like the list trimmed down. If there are some on here that nobody likes, they should be removed.
I stopped counting at 100. I looked at the played list, that I can see, on the Fith stats server. Its what you would expect. Beerbowl (still dig it), badwater (sometimes multiple), swiftwater, upward, etc. For those that log on occasionally, no big deal. For those that play nightly, its monotonous. With over 100 maps, only to play 6 seems a bit shallow. Typically, its the same 3-5 people who nominate the same maps. I like your ideas Don and would like to discuss them more in the members forum. I'd personally like to see a night (maybe Thursday?) where from 8-12 we play only custom maps. Similar to Halloween, we load 20 into a script and members vote on them. Its relatively easy to dismiss that playing an off map will kill the server. However, many times, I've seen the same map played over and over kill the server.
So I apparently didn't save any of the things but for a previous community (combo|Breaker with Murasa) I briefly ran an event each week on an off day like Tuesday focused on three custom maps. I'd make a classic tf2-like update image like this: http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/cp_steel.htm which is pretty simple to do once you have the layout prepared. The setup was simple, too. For however long it took to play those custom maps, that was the event. It didn't burn anyone out because it was only three maps. We'd go back to regular nominating and voting. However a map rating at the end of each of the custom maps as well as immediate feedback let us know which ones to keep. Some of them became regular rotation on the nominate list. I think it worked very well. I wouldn't mind doing that again. I would like to stress that I am against the idea that for 4 hours the server only does custom maps. 8-12 is just far too long to force anything on anyone. Just do a few in an event, however long it takes, and people won't get burnt out. It's what happened with halloween maps in that format. Also it lets you get better feedback on a few curated ones, and ensures more people will remember them when nominating (versus a plethora of shitty mixed with good).
