I've dabbled a bit, though it would be nice to play with not children. The Battle Royal is free to play.
I know Fuzzy, KillerRam, and Achai play. I've only played a little bit. It's good, but I think I prefer PUBG.
I've heard it's pretty good, maybe I'll check it out. (Especially since I'm interested in PUBG but haven't been able to justify buying it at full price when I'm not sure I'll even like it.)
PUBG is definitely more complex. A ton more items and realism. Fortnite is very striped down but with that it's very easy to learn and matches are much shorter. It's also just released so new items are being added to the game.
