One of the fans in my (admittedly old) tower just started making a noise. I t kinda sounds like a diesel truck idling.

I of course opened it up and dusted it out with a can of air as best I could but the sound is still here. There are three fans that could be making the noise but I'm not sure which one. If it is the CPU fan, I'm in the hurt locker and need a new one ASAP. If it is the top exhaust fan or the rear exhaust fan (least probable of the three) its still important but not urgent.

Any ideas how I can test each fan?

Pencil or pen (or your finger) through each to see if the noise stops. Even the CPU will be fine at idle for the momentary fan stop. Usually they're cheap to replace, just need to match the size and the plug type so you don't get into a weird situation.

Instructions unclear, got dick stuck in fan! Please send help!

If you have to replace the fans do yourself a favor and buy some quieter ones, I would suggest noctua fans.

And just like that, I don't hear the noise anymore.

If/when it comes back, I'll check it that way.

In case I do need to replace it, how do I tell if my penis is Intel or AMD?

CPUz will tell you the make and model of your penis, and then you can google the socket (condom) size, to get an idea of what kind of cooler to use. If it's a case penis, it's probably a 120mm. Unless you're Thor, then it's probably 80mm.

Sometimes a hammer is better than a sword :)

Now I have to spend an hour re-watching Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog again.

Yeah Solar, go and get yourself some Noctuas. I got myself 2 Noctua PWM fans for my water cooler a year ago cause the stock fans were LOUD. They are soooo good. Im getting more Noctua fans for my case fans too.

Microcenter doesn't have a 140mm Noctua :/ Newegg has a couple dozen types though.

The top fan is really close to the rear fan though, so I'm wondering if its worth it to wait for shipping. I just have a peashooter passive video card right now so my system doesn't have that much heat to worry about.

My biggest challenge is going to be getting the old 140mm fan out. I may have to take out the motherboard to get at the screws.

Do you need the fan? If you watch temps... unplug the fan while it's running... it doesn't sound like this is a i9 OC'd beast of a machine, just saying...

Right now it's certainly not a power machine. In the distant future, maybe it will be again with a serious video card, but not now.

So you might be right Broodwich, the rear 120mm will probably be enough as long as I pay attention to it.

and it still sounds like you are playing next to a washing machine.

when i scrap out servers, i tend to horde fans. not sure what i got lying around but i could see and ship for a 5'er.

Thanks for the offer lousypirate but for for now, I'm ok without a replacement.

The rear 120mm fan should be enough by itself so I just unplugged the bad top fan. If I have problems or I upgrade in the future, I'll replace the fan then.
