Picture this: Driving home with my love, listening to some sweet 80's jam, not a care in the world. Suddenly, she turns to me and says: "Do you want to play video games together?" Almost crashed the car with all the tears of joy in my eyes. So now, I got to find some good games to initiate her to the fantastic world of Nerdom. Your mission: I need your help to suggest the best games to slowly initiate the best thing in my life to the second best thing in my life. So far, I started with Portal. She enjoys it, but still adjusting to the mechanics of things. No rules, anything goes. Any genre, Any era. I'll pick the best one, and let you know how it went. Who knows, I might turn this into a review blog
Good for you, Klive and congrats buddy. Some Mario Kart or Mario Party to break the ice. Who knows? You might draw out a competitive spirit residing in her and she'll want to play games where y'all exchange kills or y'all one up each other. Just my 2 cents though.
I thought she proposed, but this is even better. Good idea starting off with Portal, that was my first thought as well. It really all depends on the style of game she enjoys. From my experience, chicks dig party games. If it's just you two, better to go co-op since you'd probably beat her at 1-on-1. Also, dunno if you're open to console gaming. Mario Kart (can't go wrong with this one.. especially something like Double Dash where you're on the same team) Mario Party / Wario Ware / etc Katamari Journey (dunno if you can play on the same console, but it is multiplayer cooperative, very fun but unfortunately on the short side) Genital Jousting (if you're feeling a bit kinky) Old school Sonic & Tails Rocket League (maybe) Single player games might be more difficult, but you guys could work on puzzle games together. Antichamber, Braid, Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons, FEZ, LIMBO, The Stanley Parable, and The Swapper could be good for this. Congrats and good luck, my friend.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime http://www.loversinadangerousspacetime.com 1 to 4 person co-op, each person can only control 1 function on your spaceship (navigation, weapons, etc), but you need more things controlled than you have peeps to do it. Lots of fun, frantic, "Shoot the aliens!" "I can't, I'm steering the ship!" type gameplay. Plus the title sounds appropriate for you. Console and PC versions.
IMO the best suggestions above are Brothers - A tale of two sons (to show her coop as well as the fact that games can have a compelling story) and Lego (no real fear of death, not a big learning curve). If you've got an old CRT TV, you can play two player Duck Hunt on the NES. Plug a controller into the other port and you get to fly the duck!
Portal is a good introduction, IMO. From there find out what she likes/dislikes about it and introduce her to more of that.
I think your best bet is to give her a lot of "hands on" time with your stuff and see what she likes best. Oh right, video games. Get an original Wii. The Wii Sports is awesome fun for new players and you can play Game Cube games like Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party, Zelda, SSB Melee, etc.. Older Nintendo games are available for download. You can even use Game Cube controllers for a more traditional console experience.
So just to be clear I will not recommend Dota 2 MOBA'a are not for anyone but a good game I always want friends to play with is Smash Bros Melee that will be some fun.
Unless you want to frustrate her and make her hate you, play Mario Kart/Mario Party. Definitely worth the rage. All jokes aside, I recommend Portal, Guns of Icarus, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Tabletop Simulator (if she's into board games), Minecraft/ Terraria and Magicka. Payday 2 if she isn't so morally inclined as well.
Thanks Boo, love the suggestions. I think puzzle games are good building blocks, no stress, just nice gameplay. Thinking Fez and the Witness as potential candidates here. And fuck no for Mario Kart or Mario Party. Not sleeping on the couch. Will try it for sure, seems like a a great game for some goofy gameplay. Has some Overcooked vibes to it, gotta check that out! Not a big fan of the LEGO series + if she was underage, I would've gone for Skylanders or some other bullshit. We got an actual NES with a great library of game! Her favorite is some obscure platformer (Salomon Key), and we did finish Bubble Bobble. I think she would love platformers, so I'm thinking Shovel Knight, Owlboy, or anything not too punishing. That what I was thinking. good introduction to PC gaming, puzzle with FPS vibe, good for picking up basic game mechanics and game meta-thinking. Oh and welcome to the FITH family! I might just get a Wii for those relax party games (but seriously, Mario Party? come on guys, you want me back on the meat market or something?). And for sex Innuendos... I don't know, I think I'm getting lazy with time. Something Something double dipping tacos with my cool ranch sauce? I'm too tired to fuck most of the time anyways. There you go, some common sense! Don't know about Payday, we're talking very beginner level here. Magicka could be funny as hell thought, and she loooooves board games.
I heard about this cute and relaxing game called Amnesia. Maybe she'll like it! As for other suggestions, I say anything co-op, possibly with a more Nintendo vibe. It will take the focus off her lack of experience, and your own success will help her feel like she's contributing. I don't know if you have access to these systems, but I'll suggest them anyway. On the Wii, New Super Mario Bros or Donkey Kong Country Returns has good co-op for beginners. I liked LittleBigPlanet for the PS3. Simple problem solving elements, and you can cutesy things up with stickers and costumes. Not saying that's what she's looking for, but I've seen it be a hit with people that are new to gaming.
Oh you, why not go back to back with Machine for pigs and SOMA if you want to really question your sanity.
Klive, true. I suggested Payday because it's basically shoot a cop. Don't have to worry about losing your balls shit over playing against other people and have those players screaming at her for being bad. I suggest on playing on Normal - Very Hard or even Overkill on both Stealth/Loud missions in a private lobby with just the two of you.
You know, she might just like scary games, I'm just too much of a wuss to find out. But I did play Amnesia, can't say it was terrible. VR horror games though... no fucking way I'm getting into that shit. I think platformers is a solid entry to learn mechanics and have fun. Could see getting LittleBigPlanet at some point, but I'd like her to visit some classic before she gets too caught up in the new stuff.
Then that could be her entry to online multiplayer! Already have Payday 2, we'll just see if its something she could get into.
Klive, if you also have Killing Floor 1/2, it's a good suggestion too. Might be too tough though; it's a horde defense game with basic principles of finding a good spot (or running around the map kiting) to camp from zombies. I suggest playing on Normal, maybe Hard if playing that. What about MMORPGs? Any chance with that? I'd suggest Guild Wars 2 or Final Fantasy XIV, but Black Desert Online is a good sandbox MMO if you'd rather. I don't know if it's on sale right now though.
